Pierre Franey's Broiled Tomatoes

6 md tomatoes 24 slivers garlic : salt to taste if desired : freshly ground pepper to : taste 3 TB olive oil 4 TB Parmesan cheese -- grated 4 TB fresh basil -- chopped
1. Preheat the broiler to high, 500 degrees.
2. Cut the tomatoes in half and arrange, cut side up, in a baking dish. Insert 2 garlic slivers in each half.
3. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and olive oil. Sprinkle with the cheese.
4. Place under the broiler for about 5 minutes until bubbling and the garlic tips start to brown. Remove garlic, sprinkle with basil and serve.
Yield: 6 servings.
